Glover came through with a couple of interesting features for these two tracks off his upcoming mixtape, a sign that he is now firmly established as more than just an actor who made a couple of rap songs. Schoolboy Q’s influence on Unnecessary is obvious with Gambino sounding more like the guy that made Bonfire than the one who rapped for five minutes about hipsters on L.E.S.
Beck’s feature is a little less expected but arguably more effective. This is in the mould of Asher Roth’s Ampersand as alt-rock meets hip-hop, with a little electronic flavour later in the track. The production is more typical of Gambino’s back catalogue with a simple piano riff anchoring the track.
